Hells bells, we're getting to the point where one really dedicated billionaire could buy 3/4 of the hardware needed off-the-shelf. Heavy launch? ***** it, the soviets pioneered assembly in orbit, now there's no need to create a whole dedicated launcher like the Ares cargo monster. Just buy a bunch of Proton boosters (dirt cheap compared to equivalent US launchers) to chuck everything up. Assemble it using KURS automated docking systems, now with almost 30 years of successful use in orbit. "But Chairboy", you mew, "isn't that what caused the collision with Mir?" ***** no, that happened when they turned the docking system OFF to do it manually. Ten Protons later, you've got a huge ***** booster assembly in orbit built out of upper-stage assemblies that are usually used to chuck comsats into Geosynchronous orbit so fat housewives can catch all their 'stories'. "But Chaaaaairboy", you honk, "isn't there a lot of waste in the form of redundant systems and mass by having all those complete booster stages up there? ***** YEAH, but it's a hell of a lot cheaper than making a new boost assembly that needs a whole new rocket to put it into orbit. Spend SMARTER, not BIGGER.The Soviets^H^H^H^H^H^H^HRussians will sell you the remaining Salyut core module. It's identical brother was the core of Mir, and another brother is the 'Zvezda' module on the ISS. It's a 40 year old design lineage that has proven itself at keeping people alive for years at a time and comes with an exercycle. You chuck this up there with one of the Protons and let it screw itself into the stack. Voi-*****'-la, you now have crew quarters that will, properly stocked, keep your astronuts alive for the duration of the trip, assuming they don't accidentally space themselves.The Mars Lander and re-launch assembly is the wildcard. You probably drop your return-stage first under an assload of parachutes with some sort of soft-landing rocket system. Let John Carmack build it, he'd ***** love a chance to actually put his code on the planet that made him his first million. Similar issues for landing the person/peoples on the planet, but that can be solved. This is the main place to insert speculative dollars, rubles, or whatever the hell we're spending in the future. And be "we're" I mean whichever software billionaire takes a break from tennis to say "***** it, let's do it."Finally, you cram a couple folks into a Soyuz and kick 'em into orbit to dock with this structure the way they've been doing since the early 60s. Light the candle, and sit back and wait.Total cost? Maybe a billion, maybe two. But a TRILLION? To get numbers like that, you really need to dedicate yourself to reinventing the wheel. |

If A) it could legally be produced on a larger scale than is currently allowed, (6 mature plants in most of the state, 75 mature plants in the city of Oakland) andB) it could legally be sold for profit,Then absolutely the cost would come down. NORML has estimated that if it were able to be grown on an industrial level, like lettuce or tomatoes, it would be less than $5 an ounce. Its all basic economics. The only reason the market price is so much higher than the cost of production is due to the risk. Efficiency comes with scale, you can't be very efficient with 6 or even 75 plant crops. The only growers doing it at scale still need to produce and distribute on the black market so there is a large hazard pay fee attached to that. Even if their products end up in the grey or white markets eventually, they have to hide production, processing, and the 1st few stages of distribution, so that brings the price up. Illegality sort of works like artificial scarcity. The growers who don't have to hide it because they only have 6 plants can't get their operations efficient enough at that scale to bring the cost of production down.Mind you if it ever were opened up for large scale commercialization, nearly everyone growing now would be put out of business or relegated to the "micro-brewery" status as the Philip Morrises and RJ Reynolds' opened for business..

I think that writer has confused the bourgeoisie with the proletariat..?
"why not give the stimulus money to the people to pay down the outstanding debts" - correct me if I'm wrong, but the bailout money was always meant to be a temporary loan. If people were to receive bailout funds directly to pay down their mortgage principles then they would just be replacing one debt with another. How exactly could we expect them to pay the bailout money back at that point when the only thing thats changed is who they write their checks out to? |

Enlightenment, if your friend had a Windows 64-bit system, he could have used the 32-bit version of IE rather than install 32-bit Firefox. The 32-bit version of IE is actually the default version available through the Windows Start Menu and if there's an IE icon set up on the desktop. You have to go and pick out the 64-bit version of IE specifically to use it. Adobe is very tardy on this issue, but at the same time the majority of Windows 64-bit users continue to use 32-bit IE or Firefox, so unfortunately it hasn't been a priority for Adobe. |
