"I have yet, though, to have anyone explain how extra information gets into dna in order to "create" new species."Mutation. It's really that simple. We're all mutants. Every human embryo has, on average, something like 129 mutations (I forget the exact number, but that's close). Most of those are neutral - not expressed at all. Some may be detrimental, some may be beneficial. The benefit/detriment of any particular mutation is determined by the environment the organism with the mutation is in. Webbed feet are a detriment in a desert, but they're beneficial in a swamp. Those organisms with beneficial mutations are more likely to pass on their genes, while those with detrimental mutations are more likely to die before passing them on.There are various types of mutations as well. Point deletions/insertions which cause frame shifts (DNA is read in sets of three - inserting or deleting a single gene causes the whole chain to be read differently), gene duplications, or just a change in a single base pair (or a few base pairs).Dawkins recently wrote a great article that sums it up here:http://www.skeptics.com.au/publications/articles/t ...
Trending topics seem to be completely random. It has picked stories that have been submitted 20 hours ago with 7 diggs and 1 comment. They said on their blog that it would pick stories with high activity. How is that a high volume of activity?

“http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liancourt_Rocks#Role_ ..."The Liancourt Rocks are a point of heated contention, alongside other Japan–Korea disputes. The Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs considers its position "inalterable". When Japan's Shimane prefecture announced a "Takeshima Day" in 2005, Koreans reacted with demonstrations and protests throughout the country, extreme examples of which included a mother and son slicing off their own fingers, and a man who set himself on fire. In 2006, five Korean "Dokdo Riders" embarked on a world tour to raise international awareness of the dispute. Another notable protest featured South Koreans decapitating pheasants in front of the Japanese Embassy."Goddamn.

Probably would have been thoughtful to blur Darlene's name as well, don't you think? Contact centre customer service people are like the front-line troops in the army. If they're setup with the right tools and resources, they're useful and helpful. But often enough they have to work under rigid company policies, with strict rules about how to handle the normal everyday complaints and moans, with very little power to go outside those policies. Their job is to keep upper management insulated from the customer unless its an unusual or serious issue. Darlene is expressing her justified frustration at not being able to directly help her customer; let's hope it doesn't get her into any trouble.?
Of course it's a FOX NEWS article. |

In the Florida Keys ( Big Pine Key, mostly ) there are about 400 Key Deer. They're tiny, about the size of a big dog and generally unafraid of stuff since they don't have any predators. Oddly, they seem to like cats. I've often seen them in the company of cats and my two kitties ( Karma - Tabby, and Mojo - Black ) are often greeted very warmly by the deer wandering through our yard. They go so far as to lick them a lot. Perhaps more strange, the cats like it and somehow knew the first time they saw them that they weren't dogs, which they regard with great distaste. Photo album of Deer and Cat pics.. http://picasaweb.google.com/airmon/CatsAndDeer#So it's possible that if the door were open, it would be a peaceful scene. |
