Pre-Vietnam it use to be. WW1 and WW2 were great money makers for the US, having people spend more money, reinvest into the economy, and save more. People would recycle cans for weapons and stop using green paint so the government could use it to help the war effort. That sort of blind patriotism is over. In the past 50 years, we've been given reason to doubt the government because we have more access to information than ever before. Reporters in Vietnam made a huge impact with fast information and actual footage. It's easy to think the war as 'necessary', but when you see the actual carnage and death, you think twice.The media and free information like the internet has changed what war means to the US, and it's no longer the easy cash cow that it once was, but some people still think it does, and some people still do profit a ton (private military contractors) while everyone else suffers.!

Actually, it went Friendster>MySpace>Facebook. And Facebook was popular way before status updates (that was just in response to Twitter). According to Julia Angwin, MySpace had the advantage of a) being customizable and b) anonymous, which is exactly what the internet loves. Then Facebook came around as a bastion of anti-anonymity, and rose to the top.
